Lucila V. Zavala Pérez is a Puerto Rican Toabajeña soprano, who began her musical studies at the Escuela Libre de Musica de San Juan, where she made her solo debut in Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria. She enrolled at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music at 17 and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Vocal Performance.
Zavala was a semifinalist in the Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in mid-April. She received the National Semifinalist Award, Gulf Coast 1st prize and Angel Ramos Foundation, CulturArte, and the audience prize in the district phase of the contest on the island.
In May 2023, she will attend the Houston Grand Opera Young Artists Vocal Academy, directed by Stephen King. In addition, Zavala received a scholarship to participate as an emerging artist at the Seagle Festival, where she will debut as the lead in Charles Gounod's opera Roméo et Juliette this summer.
Among her previous professional experiences, the summer program of Bologna International Opera Academy in 2021 and the Vozarteum Opera Festival 2019 tour in California with Professor Laura Rey stand out. She is now a scholarship recipient of the Olga Iglesias Project. She is mentored by Agent Ana de Archuleta and Bass-Baritone Ricardo Lugo. Eduardo Valdés, her vocal coach, will continue to train her.
Furthermore, the soprano sang Conversa in a production of Suor Angelica at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico. Among other roles, Zavala has performed in opera scenes as Monica in The Medium, Carolina in Il Matrimonio Segreto and Lucy in Die dreigroschenoper, among others. She has also participated actively in the Lyrical Chorale and the Puerto Rico Symphony. She has participated in opera productions such as Il Pagliacci, Carmen, La Bohème, La Vida Breve, Rutter's Requiem, and the Casals Festival. On the other hand, she worked with the Palmetto Opera in "La Bohème" in South Carolina.
Zavala was awarded a full scholarship to pursue a Master's degree beginning in August 2023 at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music in Houston, with the foremost international soprano of her times Ana Maria Martinez studio.
